I really enjoyed lunch at Spice Market at Anantara Siam. It’s the kind of place that still feels very authentically Thai, but in a more refined and relaxed setting. What I loved most is that you don’t necessarily have to stick to the menu. If there’s something you’re craving, just ask. We wanted khao soi and pad see ew, neither of which was listed, and they were more than happy to make both for us. I went with a group and, for me, that’s probably the best way to enjoy it. The portions are on the smaller side, which actually works perfectly because you can order lots of dishes for the table and try a bit of everything. My personal favourites were the pomelo salad, the green curry and definitely the crab omelette. And if, like me, you’re not prepared to queue for hours for Bangkok’s most famous one, this is a very good alternative… with air-con too :) The team were lovely, super accommodating and made the whole lunch feel very easy and relaxed. Definitely somewhere I’d come back to with friends — probably ordering even more dishes next time.

I've been coming to Spice Market for years. It used to be an easy, unpretentious Thai restaurant — nothing extraordinary, but honest food at fair prices. At some point over the past year it was given a makeover: the room is now done up to look like a high-end dining destination rather than the relaxed place it was. Everything has gone downhill since. The menu has been cut back while the prices have shot up: 1,200 baht for a piece of fried fish, 1,000 baht for a pad krapao. I could live with that if the service matched. It doesn't. Last night there were never more than three or four occupied tables in the entire restaurant, and we were still barely looked after. The food took forever. We ordered wine; the server clearly had no idea how to pour it and spilled it across the table twice. The red wine was served far too warm and had to be taken back to be chilled. Nobody came by during dinner to ask whether we wanted anything else. I asked three times to have the water bottle left on the table, since glasses sat empty while no one came to refill them. Most of the staff speak no English whatsoever — remarkable for a five-star Anantara property. Roughly $200 for that evening. In Bangkok that is serious money, and this was a disaster. Last time for me.

The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was excellent as well. The staff and intern were incredibly attentive and made us feel very well taken care of.
